1. Manufacturers

  - In Chile there are about 20 manufacturers of electrical enclosures and more than 40 distributors. Even when the market of electrical enclosures is concentrated in the industrial and real estate activities, there is also a strong presence in Chile’s mining market.

  - Among the most important manufacturers, we can mention, among others.

 Saime

 ○ Saime founded in late 50s Saime develops manufactures and sales electrical articles for home or industrial use. Among their clients we found energy distribution companies, hardware stores, distributor of electric articles, and retailers.

These manufacturers can operate in two methods: direct contracts with the final customer in the case of small or medium size projects or, through an intermediary company that can offer other electric related services for lager projects, specially mining and infrastructure. About 60% of the electrical enclosure devices that are manufactured in Chile are sold under this last method.

4. Distribution channel

 ○ There are three channels for international brands. The first two they use an intermediary who is in charge of the distribution in Chilean market. In the first case we found international brands that have a branch office like Rittal, Schneider electric and Isotron. In the second case international manufacturers pass through a general distributor that usually can work with more brands with no exclusivity. This is the case of Rhona, Gobeko(Gobantes) and Kersting.

The third channel is used by Chilean larger companies, specially mining or energy distribution conglomerates that buy their supplies directly with the international manufacturer. This is the case of E-CL, Elecnor and Enersis

About national manufacturers, there are two main distribution channels: direct contracts with the final customer in the case of small or medium size projects. This is the case for example of Arelec and Elico. This channel can also include bigger manufacturers that sales directly to final consumers for larger projects like Meltec and Saime.

In the last channel, national producers pass through an intermediary or distributor company that can offer other electric related services for lager projects, specially mining and infrastructure. SAIME is part of this channel too because they also distribute their product through retailers and hardware stores.

5. Certification

□ Chilean Electric Standard 4 / 2003 (NCH 4, 2003)

 ○ In 2004 entered into force the Standard for Low Voltage Installations 4/2003. It aims at setting minimum safety conditions that all electrical service connection in LV (less than 1000V) must meet, in order to safeguard the persons who operate or make use of such facilities, and to preserve the environment in which they have been constructed.

 ○ In essence, this new regulation incorporated higher security requirements adapted to technological advances in the industry. Also, includes provisions related to design, implementation and maintenance of LV facilities

 ○ Superintendence of Electricity and Fuels(SEC): http://www.sec.cl/pls/portal/docs/PAGE/SECNORMATIVA/electricidad_norma4/norma4_completa.pdf

Enclosures

□ Chapter 6 of the Chilean Electric Standard 4 / 2003 (NCh4, 2003)

 ○ Current regulations NCh. 4/2003 aims to establish minimum safety conditions to be met by low voltage electrical installations. In Chapter 6 NCh. 4/2003 general construction parameters on LV boards, which alone will not guarantee or ensure the continuity of services. Because of this, it is necessary to incorporate additional standards(IEC 61439) to define the constructive forms of electrical panels and test types to which they must be submitted.

 ○ Chapter 6 includes the following requirements:

  - General installation requirements: quantity and position. The enclosures must have a stamped manufacturing mark, voltage, rated current and the number of phases.

  - Manufacturing specifications

   · Constructive forms: all devices and components of the enclosure must be mounted in boxes or cabinets depending on the size.

   · The materials used for the construction of enclosures must be fire resistant, self-extinguishing, non-hygroscopic, resistant to corrosion or be suitably protected against it

   · All enclosures bust have a covered deck and outdoor door. The covered deck must prevent the contact between the external bodies and the energized parts. Must be fixed by using vertical snaps, snap elements or screw-type closures. The fixing screws used must be of the captive type.

   · The outer door has to be fully closed on it, allowing only indication lights of energized board. Its attachment will be hinged horizontally or vertically.

   · It may exempt from the requirement to have exterior door household panels or similar use, with no more than four circuits.

   · Enclosures used in the assembly of boards of large capacity shall be constructed so as to be self-supporting and they shall be mounted anchored to the floor. Besides, they have to be accessible from the front through the door and covered deck and from the sides or rear part by removable caps secured by bolts of captive type.

   · Boxes, cabinets or closets must be manufactured in steel plates or non-conductive materials

   · Metal boxes, cabinets and closets shall consist of folded and welded steel plates. The metal cabinets shall be arranged on racks profiles with strength according to the demands of assembly and closed with folded sheets that will form their covers and door panels.

   · Steel sheets used in the construction of boxes, cabinets or closets will have to have a minimum thickness as indicated:

Free surface (㎡)

Thickness of the sheet (㎜)

0.25

1.2

0.75

1.5

   · All metal components of boxes, cabinets and closets must undergo a finishing process to ensure adequate corrosion resistance; this process will at least consider one degreasing washing, acid pickling, two coats of enamel corrosion and electrostatic application process of two handed grip topcoat. The quality of this termination must be checked by applying the rules corresponding quality control.

   · The non-metallic materials used in the construction of boxes, cabinets or closets shall comply with the following conditions: not hygroscopic, in case of burning shall be self-extinguishing, smolder and emit low opacity smoke, their gaseous waste will be nontoxic, have sufficient strength to withstand an impact energy of 2 joules for door panels and 0.5 joules for panels without door

   · Enclosures must be manufactured according to the environment and installation conditions.

□ International certifications

 ○ Foreign manufacturers that are present in Chilean market, in addition to complying Chilean Standard, also have international certificates like: IEC 61439.
