1. Demand Trend in Malaysia

 

□ Polyurethane(PU)

 

 ○ PU Sandwich Panel is the most common insulated panel in Malaysia. It’s usually be used as roofing materials or as wall insulation panel.

 

 ○ As the result of the survey conducted, there are many local manufacturer for PU Sandwich Panel in Malaysia. It’s estimated about 30 to 40 local manufacturers for PU Sandwich Panel in Malaysia. Cycle World, United Refrigeration and Pangkat Industrial are consider as the top 3 largest PU Sandwich Panel manufacturer.

 

 ○ The demand for PU sandwich panel is not fixed, it’s depending on the industry.

 

 ○ Some said the demand for PU sandiwch panel is very high in Malaysia. It’s is because it’s widely used in cold storage, food outlet, pharmacy, research and development industry, hospital and food processing factory. Food industries required PU sandwich panel because they need it to keep the seafood, vegetables and meat for a long period.

 

 ○ Besdies, PU sandwich panel also widely used in convention centre because of its 100% sound proofing function.  

 

 ○ According to Mr. Foo from Pangkat Industry, which is one of the PU sandwich panel manufacturer, PU sandwich panel range from size 4 inches to 5 inches are having the largest demand in Malaysia.

 

 ○ The competition for PU sandwich panels is very high because there are too many local manufacturer. Therefor it’s very difficult for Korean manufacturer to enter Malaysia market to distribute the PU sandwich panel due to the high competitiveness.

 

 ○ The only possible way to enter the market is to consider to establish a manufacturing factory in Malaysia in order to cut down the cost of the products. In the other way, the Korean manufacturer is also advised to have a local venture, warehouse or assign a local agent in Malaysia. This can shorthen the delivery time when there is a need for extra stock or replacement urgently requested by the customers.

 

 ○ However, Korean manufacturer could try to distribute EPS insulated panel or Glass Wool insulated panel into Malaysia market because EPS panel has a very good insulation function.

 

 ○ There would be a possibility for Malaysia buyers to switch the demand from PU panel to EPS panel If the EPS panel could provide the same function as PU panel, and the thickness is less than PU panel.

 

 ○ On the other hand, some said that the demand for PU panle is low and the comptetitiveness is too high, which caused the manufacturer to stop producing PU panel and switch the business area into metal roofing and wall cladding.

 

 ○ Some of the construction for warehouses and factories in Malaysia are using sandwich panel for roof insulation only. They think that wall insulation is not necessary because Malaysia does not have 4 seasons.

 

 ○ Only certain factories and warehouses are using the sandwich panel. Most of the construction of warehouses and factories are using normal metal cladding for the wall with internal insulation layer. It’s always base on customer’s requirements.

 

 ○ Every sandwich panel which imported into Malaysia must go through SIRIM test to get approval before it can be used for construction works. This is due to the concern of the imported sandwich panel which did not go through the SIRIM test might cause accident such as fire.

 

 ○ SIRIM(Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia - http://www.sirim.my/) is a corporate organisation owned wholly by the Malaysian Government, under the Minister of Finance Incorporated, to be the national organisation for standards and quality, and as a promoter of technological excellence in the Malaysian industry.

 

□ Gloss Wool

 

 ○ One of the most common and widely known forms of insulation is mineral wool, which is made from molten glass (to produce glass wool) or stone (to produce stone wool or rock wool) that is spun into fibre-like structures.  

 

 ○ Glass wool insulation is usually used as wall panelling of auditorium, multipurpose hall, sound proof room, music practice room, meeting room, audiometric testing room, convention centre, home theater, library and hotel. This type of insulation can act as an excellent sound absorption material, giving the best acoustic level. Therefore, partition that uses mineral wool insulation can help to reduce room to room noise.

 

 ○ Glass Wool panel is also being used for factories and airports for the insulation purposes. Some Power plants required glass wool panel for wall insulation because of its acoustic purposes.

 

 ○ The demand for glass wool is not fixed as well. Some said it’s usually depend on project basis, some said the demand is very high in Malaysia.

 

 ○ For example, the demand for glass wool panel is estimated about 10,000 meter square to 20,000 meter square per project, said Mr. Tham, the factory manager of European Profiles (M) SDN BHD. They are importing the glass wool from China where the price is believed to be cheaper than Korean made glass wool.

 

 ○ The competition for glass wool panel is very high because there are many China brands which are already dominated the local market and the pricing is much cheaper than the glass wool panel from Japan and Korea.

 

 ○ For Malaysian consumers, they are more concern for the pricing over the quality. Quality is not an important criteria to them. Therefore, it’s advised that the Korean manufacturer could consider to set up a manufacturing plant in Malaysia to lower down the manufacturing cost and then it might be able to compete with China brands.

 ○ According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Malaysia imported about USD 251.38million worth of Structures and Parts of Structures Nesoi, of Iron (HS Code 730890) in the year 2012 alone, an increase from year 2011, which recorded an import value of USD 117.89 million.

 

 ○ The three main countries in which Malaysia import from are China, Thailand and United States with amount of import of USD 142.14 million, USD 39.30 million and USD 15.82 million in the year of 2012 respectively.

 

 ○ South Korea is ranked at 9th place, Malaysia imported about USD 3.55 million from South Korea in year 2012.

 ○ Based on the table above, in terms of import quantity, Malaysia imported around 86,898,976Kgs of Structures and Parts of Structures Nesoi, of Iron coded HS 730890 in total in year 2012, an increase of 35.43% from 2011.

 

 ○ However, the top three countries that exported to Malaysia differ from the above(Table 1) when it comes to the quantity of import.

 

 ○ China is leading the ranking, with supply of 68,961,655Kgs of products coded HS 730890 in 2012, followed by Singapore with 3,529,458 KGs and Vietnam with 3,378,781Kgs.

 

 ○ South Korea is placed 11th, with supply quantity of 667,516Kgs in the same year.

 

□ Import Policies and Tax

 

 ○ Based on the ASEAN-Korea Free Trade Agreement(AKFTA), there is no import tax and sales tax according to the HS Code as shown in the table below when importing into Malaysia.
