1. Demand Trend & Import duty

 

 ○ According to Indonesian Custom Tariffs Book, Sandwich panel is categorized under the HS code 68.10.11 described as: Building blocks and bricks.

 

 ○ Import trend of ‘building blocks and bricks’ went through a significant increase from 2011 up to 2012. This increase was 91.8% of quantity in Kilogram.

 ○ The largest exporter of product HS 68.10.11 is Malaysia in three consecutive years since 2009~2011 with a 16.72% increase in volume from 2010 to 2011. In 2011, imported goods from Malaysia accounts for 60.91% of total imported HS 68.10.11

2. Competition Trend

 

 ○ There are several players in the sandwich panel market since the introduction of the product in Indonesia in 1995 by an Australian building products company, James Hardie. The sandwich panel brand first introduced is Bondor. It set up its own manufacturing facility in 2000 and by this time, people are more aware about sandwich panels and its use.  Even though the term sandwich panel is still not very familiar for general public, specific contractors specializing in specific rooms and buildings are aware of this product. The usage of sandwich panels has also increased in the last few years due to increasing awareness of eco-friendly goods and increased need for clean rooms. Clean rooms demand increase because Indonesia’s economy is growing and there are more Food & Beverage, and pharmaceutical companies springing up. BPOM(Supervisory Board for Medicine and Food) implements strict rule on clean room and cold storage standardization for f&b and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore creates a stable demand for sandwich panels because these typesof building materials that are not prone to microbes become compulsory. Other industries that use sandwich panels are automobile factories for microchip/electronic assembly plant, and modular buildings or container houses on mining sites for employee’s accommodation.

 

 ○ Sandwich panels in the market are locally manufactured and a few of the companies are Korean owned. Many sandwich panels components such as the skin and core are imported from various countries such as China and Korea. Polyisocyanurate(PIR) cores are mostly imported because local PIR’s are not covered by building insurance and imported PIR’s are covered.

They use Extravom(EXPS/XPS) as the newest insulation material which are produced by extrusion manufacturing process technique which creates insulation sheets that are almost 100% sound proof (closed cell).

 

 

3. Retail Price

 

 ○ Prices for sandwich panels are significantly higher than regular building materials such as MDF, plywood, and bricks and mortar. Retail price for sandwich panels varies greatly depending on whether panels are locally made or imported and the materials used. The cheapest panel is USD 35 per square meter for the thinnest variant and the cheapest material. Imported panels (using imported component) made of FM certified PIR ranges from USD 75~80 per square meter. These prices are for panels only and not including its accessories such as aluminum profiles.

 

 

4. Distribution Channel

 

 ○ Sandwich panel manufacturer also act as distributor for their products. Some manufacturers also act as distributor and applicator. Some companies only provide the engineering and application while involving a third party factory to manufacture panels based on their specifications and become the distributor too. Sandwich panels in Indonesia will not be found in building materials shop because products are made to order according to customer’s needs.

 

 

5. Certification System

 

 ○ Sandwich panels in Indonesia are not subject to compulsory certification. However SNI (Indonesian National Standard) certification can be advantageous in giving an added value to the products putting it ahead from those without certification. Documents needed to obtain new SNI certification are as follows:

2.3. Valid Business license with the appropriate location, and scope.

- Brand certificate/ Brand registration letter from Directorate General of Law and Human Rights(HAKI). Product class in brand certificate/ registration letter has to correspond with the product petitioned for SPPT SNI.

- For brand’s holding rights not owned by SPPT SNI petitioner’s company but owned by other company/individuals has to include brand delegation letter or cooperation agreement letter from brand owner to SPPT SNI petitioner.

- For importers, include letter of delegation to act as an importer.
