1. 운모의 사용처
백운모와 금운모는 상업성이 우수하며 돌비늘이라고도 불림. 층상구조를 갖고 있고, 보통은 육각판상의 결정형을 가지며, 인상(鱗狀) ·섬유상 ·주상(柱狀)을 이루는데, 어느 형태나 밑면에 완전한 쪼개짐이 있어서 아주 엷게 벗겨짐.
광물 중에서 가장 쪼개짐이 완전하며, 쪼개진 조각은 탄력이 강함.운모는 절연성이 뛰어나고 단열효과도 내며 가볍기 때문에 매우 많은 분야에 사용되고 있음.
산출크기와 상태에 따라 등급이 정해지고 가격도 크게 변하는데 과거에는 거의 모든 전기제품에 운모엽을 절연체로 썼으나 값싼 대체품의 개발에 따라 앞으로는 경량 골재에 혼입되는 운모편의 수요가 엽상보다 증가될 것으로 전망됨.
프라스틱 제품의 충전재, 윤활재를 비롯해 요업, 페인트, 피복재, 보온재 및 화장품용으로 사용되고 있는 운모는 조운모상 보다는 분상으로 더 많이 유통되고 있음.
2. 생산현황
스리랑카에서 생산/채굴되는 대부분의 운모는 수출되고 있으며, Matale, Kebithigollewa, Ratnapura and Badulla. Matale and Kebithigollewa 등지에 매장되어 있음. GSMB 측에의하면, 채굴 허가시 환경문제를 가장 우선시 한다고 함.
Sri Lanka mostly export ‘Phlogopite’ mica which has many colors. 스리랑카에서는 다양한 색상의 금운모 (Phlogopite) 를 수출하고 있는데 현지 정부는 톤당 수출가를 지정하고 있으며, 가격은FOB USD350.00 /M ton이며 일반적인 수출 포장은 40, 50, 60 KG PP Bag임.
스리랑카에는 3 업체가 자체 광산을 갖고 수출을 주도 하고 있는데 이들 업체 중 Krishna Mining Company Ceylon Ltd.이 가장 역사가 깊으며, 자매 회사인Damsila Exports (Pvt.) Ltd가 있음. 또 Industrial Mineral Exports (Pvt.) Ltd. 및 중소 트래이딩 업체가 동 산업에 종사하고 있음..
약 30년간의 내전으로 인하여 새로운 매장지 채굴 조사에 매우 소극적이었으며, 현존하는 업체 역시 지질 탐사 조차 시도하지 않고 있는 실정인데 2009년 5월 내전 종식으로 인하여 채광 및 신규 탐사가 활성화 될 것으로 전망됨.
