1. Market Overview

 

 ○ Car traffic accident is one of the biggest causes of death. There are many unknown caused of car accidents. To overcome this, now the black box in the car is needed as well as aircraft black box. The function of black box in the car is also to record or contains various data about the car, which is very useful when the car crashed. In the United States, there is a regulation that requires each car has a black box. This is expected to be immediately implemented starting in 2015.

 

 

 ○ Global Status Report on Road Safety 2013 put Indonesia as the fifth highest death in traffic accidents in the world. Head of Traffic Police Corps, Inspector General of Police Pudji Hartanto said that now the average of accident occurred every hour in Indonesia is 12 accidents, with three people killed. In addition to the high number of deaths, traffic accidents recorded in 2013 also ingest the material losses of up to Rp 254,608 billion. In 2013, there were 101,037 traffic accidents cases in Indonesia that caused 25,157 people were killed.

                  Note: Death is a person dead from injuries sustained in a transport related accident within 30 days of that accident. Serious Injury is a person who receives treatment in a hospital for more than 30 days after the accident. Slightly Injury is a person who receives treatment in a hospital for less than 30 days after the accident.

 ○ National Police Chief Gen. Sutarman predicts that the number of traffic accidents will increase in the future. One of the indications is the increase in the population of Indonesia. By the population growth, the number of vehicles in Indonesia is also increasing. By 2 percent increase in population and vehicle growth exponentially as much as 8 percent, the traffic accidents may increase in the future.

 ○ By the tables above we can estimate the potential market for black box for vehicles in Indonesia. To simply the estimation and directly target to potential users of car black box, this report will focus to Jakarta as a “big fish”.

 ○ According to Head of Sub Vehicle Registration and Identification(Regident), Directorate of Traffic, Jakarta Police, Sr. Commissary Usman Latif, recorded that in 2013 the number of vehicles in Jakarta and surrounding areas(Jabodetabek) reached 16 million units. From the data gathered, there are 3 million units of passenger cars, 11 million units of motorcycles, 360 thousand units of buses, 617 units of freight cars, and 133 units of special vehicles. The number of such vehicles increased 9.8 percent from 2012.

 

 ○ Car black box is just introduced to Indonesian market since last year hence just known by certain communities. Actually, there is no information about its market size. However, we can do simply estimation about the market of it. In Jakarta, with the total passenger car is 3 million units, if there are 10% of it will use car black box with price per unit approximately is Rp 500,000, hence there might be 300,000 units of black box needed with sales value around Rp 150 Billion. By this estimation, of course the market of car black box is pretty good potential.

 

 

2. Import Trend

 

 ○ Actually, there is no exact information about the import value of car black box in Indonesia due still pretty new in the market. To get nearly close information about the import of products, as mentioned in the applicant form of Engion that the HS Code for black box is HS Code 9031.80, here is the information about its import value, top 10 origin countries, and the import tariffs and taxes.

 ○ South Korea was ranked on the 6th position for the origin country that imported products under HS Code 9031.80.90.00. The imports value reached US$ 4,233,990 with market share 2.8%. The imports value unfortunately decreased 50.6% compared to previous year that reached US$ 8,574,491.

 ○ Car black box has not regulated yet in Indonesia.

 ○ There are several retailers sell car black box. Most of them are online store.

5. Suggestions for Korean Companies

 

 ○ In order to enter Indonesian market for car black box products, Korean companies can find an Indonesian local partner with business area in car accessories industry.
