1. Market Overview

 

 ○ There have been a wide varieties of concrete piles available in the market and are being employed in diverse projects of construction in Malaysia.

 

 ○ Amongst the most prominent are bored pile, precast concrete pile, reinforced concrete pile(RC pile), pre-stressed spun concrete pile, precast spun square pile, pre-stressed high strength concrete pile(PHC) and so forth.

 

 ○ In accordance to industrial standards,  the concrete pile will be categorized to different grades/ standards, varying with the quality of products. The grade 60 of concrete pile will be referred to as Precast Concrete Pile(PC pile) and Precast Square Pile and concrete pile graded 80/90 refers to Pre-stressed High Strength Concrete Pile(PHC) – Round in shape.

 

 ○ As for Pre-Stressed High Strength Concrete Pile(PHC Pile), according to the main market players of such product’s manufacture in the country,  the total production of PHC piles in Malaysia are amounting to an estimation of  82,000 tones per annum, quoting respondents from CEPCO.

2. Competition Trend

 

□ The most commonly produced concrete piles in Malaysia compose of mainly Reinforced Concrete Piles(RC),  Precast Concrete Piles(PC), Prestressed/ Pretensioned Spun Pile – normal strength,  Prestressed Spun Square Piles. For PHC piles, there are merely a few number of local players who have been known as predominant manufacturers with intensive focus on production of PHC piles seizing majority of market share in Malaysia.

 

□ The most premier players producing PHC piles comprise of only 4 of them and they are referred to as below:

 

 ○ Industrial Concrete Products Sdn Bhd.(ICP)

  - Remark: They are believed to be the biggest manufacturer of PHC piles in Malaysia. According to Mr Ong – Sales Engineer, they are running a number of 10 different factories nationwide throughout Malaysia with a total of 13 production lines collectively for the output of PHC piles. Their market share of PHC piles in Malaysia is reckoned to be approximately 40% domestically.

 

 ○ Concrete Engineering Products Berhad(CEPCO)

  - Remark: They are one of the most premier manufacturer of PHC piles with vast experience of producing high quality concrete engineering background and history. They are operating the production of PHC piles with the manufacturing facilities of 2 in northern Malaysia, 2 in southern Malaysia and 3 factories in central region of Malaysia collectively comprising of 7 production lines.  Of these lines, the factory in Pasir Gudang, Johor, southern region of Malaysia is able to produce an output range of 200㎜ to 1,000㎜ PHC piles while the remaining factories in other region mainly focus on the output of 600㎜ PHC piles.  

 

 ○ Eng Beng Group (Eng Beng Manufacturing Sdn Bhd)

  - Remark: Eng Beng has been specialized in the manufacturing of concrete piles for large number of concrete piling projects from either civil or private sector.

  - Amongst their core products arrays from Reinforced Concrete Pile(RC) and also Pretensioned  High Strength Spun Concrete Piles.

 

 ○ Sarawak Concrete Industries Berhad(SCIB)

  - Remark: SCIB commenced its operations in 1979 after setting up a plant in Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia. They are one of the public listed company on Malaysia Securities Exchange Berhad. Among the core concrete products manufactured compose of an array of spun concrete pipe, reinforced concrete piles, pre-stressed high strength spun concrete pile, reinforced concrete square pile, etc.

 

□ Other than the abovementioned 4 companies, there are a number of other local players producing other type of concrete piles undertaken in the manufacturing facilities locally, and they are, for instance:

□ However, according to the related players in the industry, there may be some imports of PHC piles from overseas for the fulfillment of needs in some projects domestically in Malaysia.  Basically, the local production capacity is capable of coping with local demand of PHC piles, yet, some projects (either government or private) which are in rush of materials due to tight work schedule for project completion,  there will be some demand to import PHC piles from overseas, especially from China.  In other words, China is the main source of supply abroad of PHC piles in Malaysia, followed by the locally produced supply,  as per indicated in the  table above.

4. Product Standard Certification & Import Tariff

 

 ○ According to the industrial players, for the import of PHC piles or other concrete products, there will be incurred import tariff as follows;

 ○ For the supply of PHC piles in some mega project initiated by Malaysia government, it is made mandatory for the PHC piles to meet the JKR(Malaysian Works Department) product standard, via acquiring and obtaining the IKRAM product certificate from IKRAM QA Services Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian legal entity which act as an independent Certification Body(CB).

 

 ○ For those piling materials which are employed in private projects, it is much preferable and made prestigious if they are well certified by various certification authorities as follows:

  - ACI Standard - American Concrete Institute

  - BS – British Standard

  - JS - Japanese Standard

  - PSB - Productivity and Standard Board Standard, Singapore

  - IKRAM Standard
