1. Demand Trend

 ○ Morocco is a country of mining tradition whose soil is also rich of phosphate as well as of base metals, precious metals, rocks and industrial minerals. Furthermore, and according to figures from the Budget Department, the construction of major infrastructure such as dams, roads and ports, has mobilized 19 billion MAD, only 8.2 billion MAD of which is disbursed thus far by funding agencies, primarily the EU, Japan and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development(IBRD). These projects are carried out in the first place in Tangier - Tetouan, Taza -El Hoceima- Taounate and Marrakech -Tensift- El Haouz. Indeed, these regions have concentrated the bulk of the dams as they are experiencing a sustained agricultural activity in recent year’s development. However, the rest of the infrastructure projects do not involve a clearly defined region and is assigned to the central services, especially when it comes to roads and ports, whose impact is felt in all regions.

2. Competitive Trends

 ○ According to some professionals, and after seeing their orders deteriorating in recent years, construction and public work equipment firms have necessarily tended to slow down their investments in equipments. Furthermore, since 2008, the market was flooded with imported used equipments which generated a significant shortfall for distributors of new machines. A large part of these imported machines are received through Spanish financing companies that seized the equipments from failing companies and have sold them, generally in good condition, at cheap prices in Morocco. Imports of used equipments are also due to foreign construction companies who obtain bids in Morocco and bring their own machines for temporary use instead of acquiring equipments in Morocco.

 ○ And even if these companies are launching consultations to purchase local products, they end up ordering materials from distributors in their country of origin with whom they have long business relationships entitling them to discounts. There are also actors performing specific operations and exercising more often in the informal sector which boost imports. All these factors explain why more than 70% of market volume returns to used equipments.

3. Retail Pricing Trends

 ○ In Morocco many brands are available in the market, and since the sector is not yet organized, it is difficult to have exact and accurate figures about origins of supplying countries. However, according to some Moroccan players we could get the following prices.

 ○ Earthmoving buckets are available under the brand names: Morin, Arden Equipment, Emily, Riman, MBI, Magsi...: They are used to create trenches and excavation of materials of medium hardness.

4. Distribution System

 ○ Distribution of construction and public works equipments is mostly unorganized but the whole distribution structure can be broadly classified as follow:

 ○ All mining get products are imported with a majority of used ones. However, many professionals and associations are calling for organizing this sector in order to save their businesses and to keep the competitiveness within the frame of quality and not just price.
