1. 수요동향

 

 ○ Most of the agricultural vehicles imported to Sri Lanka, are tractors. As there is no production of agricultural related machineries locally, all most all the agricultural related machineries are imported to Sri Lanka.

 

 ○ MICRO Cars company ltd., is the only company in Sri Lanka, who is assembling tractors under the brand name – Agri. www.microcars.lk 

 

 ○ We can see a high demand for machineries imported from China due to low price compared to the products of other countries. But the quality aspect of the Chinese products are not that strong, Since the tractor market is basically price sensitive, prospective buyer do not concern about the durability of the product.

 

 ○ The import duty on these agricultural vehicles remained unchanged when the government slapped heavy taxes on other commercial vehicles imported.

 

 ○ There is a huge competition among trading companies of agricultural machineries. There are several companies who are popular throughout the country and have been importing & distributing tractors and other agricultural machineries for decades.

 ○ On the other hand there are lots of trading companies who do in very small scale targeting only a niche market.

 ○ Most important factor in this market is, end users/ farmers are concerned very short term outcome, therefore whenever they purchase, and their main concern is price factor. Therefore any company who is price sensitive would win this agricultural market.

 

 ○ Further in order to attract prospective buyers in this competitive market most of the companies are using sales promotional strategies.

 ○ As there is no manufacturing of tractors in Sri Lanka, 100% of the demand is imported from other countries especially from China & India.

 

 ○ Mahendra, Tafe, Sifand, John deer, Kubota, Agrotec, Agro etc are some of the known brands in Sri Lanka.

 

 ○ Following companies can be listed as the main importing companies of agricultural products. Browns & Company (Tafe, Sifang brand), DIMO PLC (Mahendra from India) , Dev Group are considered as major competitors in the market.
