1. Market size and distribution structure

□ Market size

○ According to statistics, there are approximate 28 millions of motorbike and 1.5 millions of automobile available in Vietnam. As this number is expected to increase by 20~25% each year, it is estimated that there would be about 60 millions motorbike and automobile by 2016. Based on Vietnam Environment Administration, there are approximate 8,328 tons of lead-acid batteries used for automatic vehicles each year.

○ Vietnamese automobile battery market is diversified with many brands from both local manufacturers and importers. Among those brands, Dongnai which belongs to Pinaco(Dry Cell & Storage Battery Jsc.) is the dominant player in the car batteries market, which account for nearly 40% of market share. The Company is the battery supplier of automobile and motorbike manufacturers which allocate facilities in Vietnam such as Ford Vietnam, Suzuki Vietnam, Mercedes-Benz Vietnam, Thaco Truong Hai, Kia Motors, Hyundai Vinamotor, Vina Mazda, Honda Vietnam, Mekong Auto, Samco.

○ Following Pinaco is GS manufacturer – which is a 100% Japanese-invested company, accounts 30% of the market share for car batteries. The Company is the supplier for many large-scale automobile and motorbike organizations such as Toyota, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Mitsubishi and Piaggio. Moreover, GS is not only well-known for stable quality products, but also for excellent customer services. The Company often organizes events to diffuse knowledge of end-users on their ways to use and maintain the battery products.

○ Besides locally manufactured brands such as Pinaco, Tia Sang, GS, Eminac. There are also other imported brands including Atlas, Delkor, Cene(Korea), Bosch(Germany), 3K(Thailand), Panasonic(Japan). Among those brands, Korean car batteries are quite well-perceived in Vietnamese market such as Atlas, Delkor, Rocket thanks to its recognized quality and affordable price.

○ However, from the import–export statistic under year 2011, China is the biggest exporter of goods under HS Code 8507.80, account for 56.64% of imported goods. Meanwhile, Korea is the second biggest exporter, account for 38.06% of imported goods. The remaining imported goods belonged to India which accounts for 5.3%. There could be imported goods from other markets, but the statistics have not been collected yet.

□ Distribution structure

○ Besides local brands, imported automobile battery products enter Vietnamese market through distributors or agents. From those distributors, these battery products can be delivered to customers directly or through other retail outlets such as auto parts stores or auto maintenance companies.

□ Used automobile batteries

○ Supply source

- In a report released by IFC(International Finance Corporation), there have been 40,000 tons of lead-acid batteries released in 2010. It is estimated that this number will reach the number of 70,000 tons by 2015.

- According to some investigations conducted by Vietnam Academy of Science and Environment, re-collecting ratio of hazardous waste like automobile batteries is very low in public areas. Statistics show that end-users usually resell these products to waste collectors, repair stores or storing at home, rather than bringing them to collecting agents.

- Ten years ago, local big manufacturers who produce car batteries such as Pinaco(Dry &Storage Battery Company) and Tia Sang Battery used to collect used car batteries for restoring or recycling purposes. However, their buying price was so low compared to price offered by collecting waste armies. As a result, used car batteries are not re-sold to manufacturers anymore.

- At the moment, re-collecting and processing of used automobile batteries is usually executed by private owners. Lead from old automobile batteries is disassembled by burning, decomposing, separating and reserving. Besides waste collectors, used car batteries are also collected by car batteries retailers themselves. They recollect the batteries at low price, restore them, and re-sell to customers. In some cases, customers even don’t know that they have bought the used car batteries at price for new products.

○ Regulations on used automobile battery product

- According to Decision 50/2013/QĐ-TTg on regulations of re-collecting and treating of eliminated products which would only be effective on 1st January 2015, eliminated products such as batteries, electronic equipments, chemicals used in industrial, agriculture, fishery…must be re-collected and re-treated. With this Decision, manufacturers or importers of automobile batteries must be responsible for establishing of centers to re-collect those used batter products. They must also negotiate with clients on methods of moving used batteries to collecting centers, and transfer them to processing agents.

○ Recommendation

- Due to the inconsistence of supply sources on used car batteries, it would be disadvantaged for Korean companies to enter Vietnam’s recycled batteries market at the moment. Even though the Decision 50/2013/QĐ-TTg on waste products would be effective in 2015, it would need more times to be fully implemented. For example, there are still no regulations on the criteria for agents who would have the licenses and rights to collect used car batteries. Therefore, Korean companies must be careful in consideration for entering the Vietnam’s recycled car batteries market.
