1. Indian Radio Market

 

 ○ Radio (FM) sector is projected to touch the Rs 2,300-crore (US$ 397.93 million) mark within three years of the roll-out of the much-awaited Phase III licences, according to estimates by CII and Ernst & Young. The sector is anticipated to close FY13 at Rs 1,400 crore (US$ 242.22 million).

 

 ○ All India Radio has reached 92% area of the Indian subcontinent and over 99.19% of the population has access to this cheap medium of communication. Against only six radio stations in 1947, today the number has increased to 326. The All India Radio (AIR) broadcasts programmes in 23 languages and 146 dialects, according to the official website of Prasar Bharati.

 

 ○ Indian Readership Survey (IRS) report says that share of radio listenership on mobile phones has increased from 20% in 2009 to about 30% in 2011-12. Future growth in listenership is expected to come from increased penetration of FM radio in smaller cities as phase III licenses are expected to be issued later this year.

 

 

2. Growth Propeller of Radio Market India

 

 ○ Increasing FM enabled radio phones, mobiles and car music systems.

 

 ○ During 2010, there were a total of 245 channels operating across India.

 

 ○ Government has introduced favorable guidelines for expansion of the third phase of FM radio broadcasting services, which will bring 294 towns and 839 stations under FM coverage.

 

 ○ Earlier only educational institutions were permitted to set up a community radio; in 2008 liberalization of policy on community radio took place and currently 29 community radio stations are operational in the country.

 

 

3. Policies Support Aiding Sector Growth

 

 ○ FDI limit in radio increased to 26 per cent from 20 per cent.

 

 ○ Private operators allowed owning multiple channels in a city, subject to a limit of 40 per cent of total channels in the city.

 

 ○ Private players allowed carrying news bulletins of All India Radio.

 

 ○ Further boost may be given to the radio sector by charging licence fees on the basis of ‘net income’ so as to provide relief to loss making radio players.

 

 

4. Opportunities in Radio Sector

 

 ○ Phase III of e-auctions for FM radio licences will provide an impetus to the segment.

 

 ○ Radio advertising is another area likely to experience accelerated growth.

7. Government Initiative

 

 ○ Status of implementation of DRM transmitters in AIR – Status report as on 4th June 2013. All the DRM transmitters are operating in simulcast mode at present.

  - 1000㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Rajkot, is already transmitting analog service at 1071㎑ and DRM service at 1080㎑ w.e.f. Sept. 2012.

  - 1000㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Chinsurah has been tested on 594㎑ and 1134㎑. The transmitter will operate on 594㎑ in day time and on 1134㎑ in evening and night time. Test transmission has been started with analog frequency at 594㎑ and DRM service at 604㎑.

  - 20㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Chennai C is transmitting analog service at 783㎑ and DRM service at 793㎑ w.e.f. March 2013.

  - 20㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Bikaner, is under testing. The analog service will be at 1068㎑ and DRM service will be at 1078㎑.

  - 20㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Barmer, has been tested. The analog test transmission has already started at 1458㎑ and DRM service at 1468㎑ will be starting soon.

  - 20㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Delhi C, is under testing. The analog service will be at 1395㎑ and DRM service will be at 1405㎑.

  - 20㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Guwahati, is under testing. The analog service will be at 1035㎑ and DRM service will be at 1045㎑.

  - 20㎾ AM DRM transmitter at Tawang, is under testing. The analog service will be at 1521㎑ and DRM service will be at 1531㎑.
