1. Agricultural Machinery in Pakistan

 ○ While there is a great potential of growth for agriculture recent development concerning the agricultural machinery are likely to act as barrier for further mechanization of farming in the country.

 ○ The one most discussed issue is the imposition of 17% GST on the sales of Agricultural tractor is imposed from January of this year which is criticized by all major pillars of agricultural industry. Initially government had planned to impose this from 2011 but was cancel because of the pressure of concern authorities but now finally it is imposed by government notification.

 ○ Pakistan is a country where almost 60% of workforce is associated with agricultural sector in different shapes. Starts from cultivation to sell of agricultural goods from land to retail outlets. Almost 90% of Rural population is associated with agricultural sectors includes women as well.

2. Tractors Market in Pakistan

 ○ Pakistani tractors market is mostly dependent on locally manufactured tractors from last few years. Millat Tractors and Al Ghazi Tractors are the leading group in Pakistan involved in local manufacturing of tractors as per international standards. Through transfer of technology from Big Names like New Holland and Messay Furguson have joint venture with Al Ghazi Tractors and Millat Group through transfer of technology to Pakistani market.

 ○ Millat, with over 60% of market share, manufactures and markets tractors under an agreement with Massey Ferguson, which is part of an America firm AGCO. Al-Ghazi is the local subsidiary of Dubai’s Al-Futtaim Group.

 ○ Millat has recently succeeded in getting approval from Massey Ferguson to start exporting tractors and semi-knocked down kits to China, among other countries.  ○ As agro based economy Pakistan is importing combine harvesters from different parts of the world. But the market is segmented in two parts. New combine harvesters and used combine harvesters. As per the dealers now a day used combine harvesters are the real selling items because the prices of new combine harvesters is very high and users prefer low price and branded products for harvesting. This year Turkish brand Class is also introduced in the market and traders saying that Class is good product if we compare with prices. 4. Rice Transplanters in Pakistan

 ○ Pakistan is one of the major rice export country in the world but still we are following traditional rice planting systems because of lack of awareness and education in farmers.

 ○ The traditional rice planting system comprises puddling method that requires 10 to 20㎝ of standing water throughout its growing season resulting in higher water use than actually required. The problem of labor and expenditure has been aggravated due to the industrialization and urbanization. Lower plant population is also one of the main constraints in obtaining high yield under conventional planting.

 ○ However, a number of planting systems such as parachute rice transplanting technique, the SRI-method, the Chinese technologies, planting rice under plastic film cover, double cropping, hybrid planting, the Chinese rice transplanter, and directing seeding are other alternate systems which reduce cultivation cost, labor and water needs of the crop but mostly farmers are unaware with these techniques and technologies.

 ○ In 2013 year total 8 rice transplanters are imported and in 2012 only 7 transplanters was imported as per Pakistan bureau of Statistics. This shows that awareness regarding rice transplanters in Pakistan is nearly at 0%.
